Many people are looking for proofreading and editing jobs at home. The following jobs at home proofreading and editing jobs have ongoing or occasional jobs available for people who want to work from home as editors or proofreaders.

Keep in mind that most of these companies will require experience or a degree in a related field before they will hire you.

What if you don’t have proofreading experience?

You should stick to applying to companies that don’t require it. Listed below are a few, and this list of ways to find entry-level proofreading jobs online gives more options and insight.

Another option is to start your own proofreading side business where you offer your services to clients, charging whatever you want. As long as you are good at what you do, you can make a living doing it without a degree or past professional experience.

The company regularly hires for work at home proofreading and editing

1 – Cactus Communication

Cactus Communications requires prior English editing experience. Job opportunities are appearing globally. However, they do not hire people in New York.

Editors here earn an average of $14 to $19 per hour.

2 – Scribe

Open to UK, US, Canada, South Africa and Australia. Must be a native English speaker to qualify. Scribbr editors can earn $25 to $27 per hour.

You must be available to edit at least 10 hours per week to work with them.

3 – Scribendi

Scribendi pays people with experience to edit and proofread at home. You are hired as an independent contractor. Their editors reportedly earn around $25 per hour. They will hire only Windows PC people.

They require you to have a bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree and/or professional experience.

4 – Vocabulary

Wordvice seems to be open worldwide to their in-house proofreading and editing work. You must have extensive editing experience and an advanced degree (preferably a master’s, doctorate, or equivalent degree) to qualify to edit for them.

They have regular translators open.

5 -Proofreading Services

Proofreading services claim that their pay ranges from $19 to $46 per hour depending on the urgency of the project you are working on. You can work whenever you want. You must pass the 20 minute test to be considered.

6 – American Journal of Expertise

American Journal Specialists hire work from home editors as remote contractors across a range of fields. According to Glassdoor, salaries are as low as $11/hour and as high as $25/hour.

7 – Scribe Media

Scribe Media doesn’t always hire. Their editing jobs pay $60/hour.

8 – Cambridge Proofreading and Editing

Cambridge Proofreading appears to be open to the world. You must have a minimum bachelor’s degree to qualify to work here. Average pay is $20 to $25 per hour.

Edit 9 – 911

Editing 911 appears to have ongoing openings for dissertation editors, thesis editors, and book editors. However, you must have a PhD in English or other writing-intensive discipline to qualify to work for them.

10 – Edit quickly

Edit Fast has an ongoing need for editors, proofreaders and writers. They do not guarantee that you will have work if you accept to work for them. Being accepted means you are eligible for projects.

This company pays their editors 40 percent of the final project price.

You must have a degree from an accredited university as well as past proofreading experience to qualify.

11 – Enago

Enago hires freelance editors worldwide to edit work in various academic subject domains. Must have extensive experience and education to qualify. They need at least 5 years of relevant academic copyediting/substantive editing/proofreading experience.

Enago hires freelance peer reviewers and journal experts.

12 – English Tracker

Applications are not currently open for editing jobs on the English tracker, but be sure to keep tabs on the site if you’re interested. You must be a native English speaker with two years of academic editing experience to be considered. You must have a PhD or have verifiable past experience.

This company allows you to work on your own schedule, and they pay once a month for any work completed in the previous month.

13 – Gramli

Gramley claims they are always looking for “extraordinary editors” to work for them. All their editing jobs are contract jobs, and you can enjoy a flexible schedule. They can be opened worldwide.

Obviously they get hundreds of applications every week, but if they like your application they will contact you.

14 – IXL Learning

Occasional openings for remote content editors/proofreaders. Must have lots of experience. Check their job openings page to see if the position is listed.

15 – Kibin

Occasionally hiring freelance proofreaders and editors. If the job is closed, you can submit your email to find out when they are hiring again.

Kibin copy editors earn between $17K and $19K per year. Editors with international time zones or overnight availability outside the US and Canada are particularly encouraged to apply.

16 – Kirkus Media

Kirkus Media often has openings for in-house editors, book reviewers, and copywriters.

They pay monthly through direct deposit. A Glassdoor review of Kirkus says that there is usually a lot of editing work available.

17 – Proofreading Pal

Home proofreading jobs for proofreading pals require you to meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be currently employed or enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited United States college or university and have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of professional proofreading and editing experience.

This is independent contractor work that can be exposed in multiple countries. Proofreaders are paid per word and projects are first-come, first-served because they are posted on a job board for all proofreaders to choose from.

18 – Polished paper

Polish Paper requires you to take a 35-question editor’s test to be considered for work. They allow you to use external resources to complete the test.

19 – Proofread now

According to the Proofread Now recruitment page, when they hire, they require a minimum of five years of experience as a professional proofreader and you have to do very well on a number of difficult editing tests.

20 – Quality Proofreading Services

Quality Proofreading Services is always interested in hearing from experienced proofreaders and editors, especially those with backgrounds in science/engineering and business/management.

This organization is based in the UK, and it is unclear if it is open to US-based editors.

21 – Managed Editing

Editing conducted on their website location is not a factor when working with them. However, they make it clear that they are very selective. You must have at least five years of past editing experience with a college degree to qualify.

22 – WordsRU

WordsRU seeks editors with a master’s degree, PhD or equivalent professional experience in an academic discipline.

In addition to a degree, they want you to have at least two years of professional experience as an editor, copyeditor or proofreader.

23 – Wordy

Wordy is currently updating their editor platform so it is not possible to apply right now. However, you might want to keep tabs on it to see when they open it back up again. They don’t have a date for when that will happen.

24 – MasteryPrep

MasterPrep has an occasional need for academic proofreaders who can proofread content and test the user experience of students and teachers on the online platform.

Experience in quality assurance, user testing and other quality control positions is preferred but not required.

You get paid by assignment and completion. The job listing states that the rate is $25/hour.

25 – Elite Editing

You can work from anywhere as an editor at Elite Editing. But they promise you to work at least ten hours per week. They also have occasional openings for writers.

Their recruitment page doesn’t say how much experience you need to be accepted here, but you do need to take a test and submit your resume to them.
