Tips for selling items online
Most of the time, when you sell your stuff online, you need to take some pictures and write a description for the item you are selling. However, before you begin the listing process, make sure your items are clean and looking their best. Appearance is important when you’re selling, and the more pristine your item, the more money you can make.
Once your item is clean, you’re ready to take some photos Make sure to have a clean and uncluttered background with good lighting. You’ll also want to take multiple shots of the image, so the potential buyer can see all the details of the item.
Along with your images, you’ll want to write a descriptive blurb about the item, including all the keywords a potential customer might search for. For example, if you’re selling a sofa, you’ll want to include the word couch in your listing. Other aspects to include in your listing include size, material, color, condition, brand, price, and whether the home is smoke-free or pet-free for people with allergies.
You should list the payment methods you are willing to accept; Normally, this would be cold hard cash. If you trust the person, for example, you’re selling on Facebook, and see that the person is a friend of a friend, you can use a cash app like Venmo. Unfortunately, you have to be on the lookout for scammers – they’re everywhere! Never accept a check, give your bank account number, or give an item to a person without payment in hand. Selling in person
If you are willing to be enterprising, you can easily sell your used items to local shops such as:
- Buffalo Exchange – Clothing, shoes and jewelry
- GameStop – Games, hardware, consoles, controllers, headsets and phones
- Half price books – Books, CDs, DVDs, Games and Comics
- The music goes round – Musical instruments, gear and equipment
- Plato’s closet – Clothing, shoes and accessories
- Play again – Sports equipment
- Once upon a child – Children’s clothing, shoes, toys and baby gear
- Style encore – Clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories
In addition to these well-known franchises, you can also sell items to local consignment stores and pawn shops. I personally find that I make the most money selling through sites like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. They don’t take a percentage of sales, so you earn more, but you have to take photos, write descriptions, and meet to exchange products.
A word of caution. If you are selling privately and meeting strangers to exchange your items, be sure to do so during the day in a well-trafficked public place. If you can, bring your partner or friend with you, or at least let someone else know your meetup plans so they can keep an eye on you.
Have a garage sale
If you have a lot of stuff to sell, or if you have neighbors and friends who want to sell things too, have a weekend garage sale. It’s a good way to get rid of your used items quickly while making a little extra money. The downside to garage sales is that people often try to undercut sellers, so you’ll make less money this way than selling individual items.
