How to Make Big Money Selling Courses on Udemy (Tips from a Super Seller)

Super seller Darrell Gurney shares how he got started and made money instructing courses offered by Udemy. Darrell earns extra money by selling a self-paced course on Udemy.

To date, Darrell has enrolled over 1,000 people in his Udemy courses. Today he shares his success stories and tips with us.

Tell us a little about yourself. What was your motivation for listing the course on Udemy?

I am a 25-year executive and career coach, author, speaker and spiritual mentor. I’ve helped people of all walks of life find their passions, change careers, and build businesses that support those passions. I wanted to reach a level of the market that wouldn’t normally be able to afford my quality coaching, as well as create a self-study program that could help people make great strides in their careers anytime, day or night. . A friend suggested I get something online in the form of a learning module, and Udemy seemed like the place to try.

Tell us a little about how Udemy works? How much can trainers expect to earn?

Udemy is a really great system in the sense that they offer tons of free training for instructors on how to create and market your courses. They need instructors to be educated as it can be a lengthy process to create and deploy a course and Udemy has certain standards that must be met to qualify, thus managing and protecting their own brand. How much can one earn…that’s the million dollar question (pun intended). There are Google hangout videos of Udemy instructors admitting to a person that they’ve done virtually nothing for months. But, over time, by learning what works, learning how to market better, learning how to create better and more in-demand courses, one can move to a point of making decent money. It seems to be a rite of passage, being able to hang on through the frustrations of learning with one’s first course, becoming more intelligent and effective by building on as much content as possible.

What was your first step to getting started? Are there any initial costs involved?

Personally, my first step was to hire a college intern to actually research the different platforms out there like Udemy and see where we should start. Then, he researched me and pointed me to what resources were available and what we needed to know to be successful with Udemy to learn upfront. The costs involved depend on how one chooses to build its product offering, and there are many ways to go, from high-end cameras to simple iPhone video, from expensive lighting equipment to how best to capture daylight coming through windows. can be used I spent on getting some midrange equipment so we could put on our best first performance.

What has been your biggest surprise? road?

Again, the biggest surprise for all instructors in general is that, after all the blood, sweat and tears to create a product that meets the Udemy criteria, the world isn’t just waiting to throw money at your feelings. A type of content. There is a lot of competition for almost any subject, and regardless of your credentials, who gets noticed and what courses are bought comes down to primary marketing. There are only information marketers out there who know very little about a subject but know how to market well enough to make more sales than true subject matter experts. So, it’s a humbling and equalizing experience, where no matter what you know, you have to learn how to market better so that the world can benefit from that knowledge.

Sign up to Udemy and get their free course on how to create Udemy courses and other free informational content on creating Udemy courses. After that, there are plenty of paid courses you can get too (which we did), but it’s better to test the waters and see if you want to jump into these waters with the very powerful free stuff first!

What are your future plans? Are you planning to move away from Udemy at some point?

We will be creating more content on my career and personal expansion content such as personal branding, resumes and encore careers. We are also looking at other venues and possibly hosting our videos on our own platform This is important to know: You own the content you create, but partner with Udemy and their marketing machine to get it out there.
