Earn money by selling smartphone photos

Earn money by selling smartphone photosMany freelance and budding photographers have found an excellent side income by selling photos online. Did you know that you can also earn money by selling your smartphone photos? Scoopshot is one such app that lets you do just that.

How does Scoopshot work?

Unlike some sites where you simply add photos and hope they match the publisher’s needs, Scoopshot is assignment-based. Publishers and marketers add jobs to the site by telling users which images they need. App users can then snap a shot and upload it to the site. If the publisher likes it, they can buy the rights.

Some of the current media outlets looking for photos include News Corp, USA Today and the London Evening Standard. Assignments are varied and available internationally. Current requests include children’s clothing, fall leaves, London museums, Hong Kong protests, show your cup of joe, and more. If a publication likes your portfolio they may offer you an assignment directly.

Who can join?

Anyone looking to make money from photography can join. You don’t need to be a professional photographer. Most buyers are looking for everyday people doing everyday things.

One odd thing to note: the FAQ on the main site says you can’t cash out earnings on a business account. They only work with people, not business organizations. However, you can register for free Scoopshot Pro and use your business entity/account. This will allow you to receive push notifications of assignments based on your location.

How do I pay and when?

Each task will show the publisher’s purchase price. You are only paid when a photo sells and photos are only kept on the site for 48 hours. That being said, an image can be sold multiple times depending on the license. You will be compensated for every sale.

Your earnings will be displayed on your smartphone and you can transfer funds to your bank or PayPal account at any time.

What do Scoopshot reviews have to say?

Here are some stats as per July 2013 Scoopshot Since the largest number of photographers are based in Germany, these numbers include conversion to US currency for our purposes

  • 280,000+ photographers worldwide
  • 752,000 photos submitted, 180,000 sold
  • Top users earned over $26,000
  • 59 users earned more than $1,200

Keep in mind these numbers are from over a year ago. The number above is likely to increase.

This site has been around since 2011. I haven’t seen any negative feedback yet. Just be aware that assignment availability will likely be highly dependent on location. It would be a nice side gig but not a full-time earner.
