People start working online for a variety of reasons. Working online is sometimes preferred over traditional employment for reasons such as avoiding commuting and controlling the work environment. Sometimes it’s a “side hustle” to supplement income from a regular job. Others work online because they can fit it around their family’s needs. And get into more because they find something they enjoy and it turns out there’s a way to make money doing it.
No matter what you do to make money online, the exciting thing is that there is theoretically no limit to how much money you can make. If you make smart decisions, continue to scale your business, and keep your eye on the bottom line, the sky really is the limit.
How do you define the rich?
For many people, the unlimited earning potential is a huge selling point for working online. And don’t get me wrong – unlimited income sure sounds nice. How many people make money may define being rich, but it’s not the only one.
Ramit Shetty A world-renowned personal finance expert who took his blog about money and turned it into a multi-million-dollar company that teaches people how to make money from all kinds of jobs (online and traditional). His approach began purely as financial advice – how to get “rich” in a financial sense. But over the past few years, he’s decided there’s more to being “rich” than just money.
He often challenges his audience, to decide for themselves, what constitutes a “rich life”. Sometimes that means a higher income from a high-powered job, but sometimes it means something else. Ability to work part time too so you can have more time for your family. Being able to outsource some of life’s chores (like cooking or cleaning) so you can spend more time on the things you value. Have the flexibility to go to the gym at 3pm. Being able to give generously.
What rich you mean
I like this perspective of defining your own version of a “rich life” and then working towards that goal. And I love making money online as a way to achieve that rich life, however you define it.
The truth is, there are all kinds of paths to wealth online, and one person’s path will not necessarily be the same as another’s. There are some similarities, sure, and some basic principles are fairly consistent, no matter what you’re doing. But if you really want to get rich online this year, this is it great News, because you’ve got many options! Focus on your skills and interests, and always be on the lookout for inspiration and ideas on how you can take what you already have and turn it into something that will lead you to the rich life you want.
These are some “success stories” for you to consider – people who have built businesses that make enough money for each of them to feel “rich” however they choose to define that. Each person knew what they wanted, found a way to make money that worked for them, and then made smart decisions to reach their goals. Here’s how they did it:

I mentioned ProofreadAnywhere.com Previously on my blog, because this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to work from home as a proofreader. Founder, Caitlin Pyle, started her Proofread Anywhere blog after being a freelance proofreader long enough to know it was a viable income opportunity. He didn’t see anyone else teaching him how to do it, so he decided to do it himself.
The foundation of Proofread Anywhere is its high-level courses that teach you everything you need to know about being a proofreader, from proofreading skills to business and marketing. It’s a rigorous course with tests and exams, so you’ll really know your stuff when you come out the other end. The business is strong enough that Caitlin was able to hire her husband, Ben, and they spend as much of their time together working and traveling as possible.
They took what they learned by creating Proofread Anywhere and started a new blog called The Work Anywhere Life. TWAL’s mission is to teach you how to build a viable online business that will allow you to — yes — work anywhere. Caitlin and Ben spent a year traveling abroad and have now returned to the US to build their dream home. To them, being able to work from anywhere in the world is a huge motivation.
Run a (brilliantly monetized) blog
If you’ve hung around my blog for long, you’ve probably seen me mention Elite Blog Academy, the flagship program of my blogging mentor, Ruth Soukup. Ruth started a blog back in 2010. He says he started it to keep himself accountable when he was trying to get his spending under control, but eventually the blog became much more than an accountability measure. He became a highly successful planner, wrote a book, became a speaker, and eventually, became one of the premier blogging experts out there.
Ruth is right About him page What blogging taught him is that the definition of “living well” doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with it thing He was in her life, but how she was living and who she was becoming. Ruth’s blogging empire is definitely profitable, but it only took off after she realized what being “rich” really meant.

Offer a valuable service
Have you heard of making your laptop life? This is an online training and mentorship program run by Julie Stoan and Madeline Corke, two online entrepreneurs who were able to start their own “from the ground up” and grow their personal VA businesses into something incredible. Together they own a digital marketing agency called Pipe & Lime and run CYLL to teach other seniors how to be massively successful.
Julie said in a recent interview that being a VA is a great way to get rich online, but you have to be strategic about it. You can’t just offer the same-old, same-old VA skills and not bring in more than about $35/hour. And while that’s pretty good money for a lot of people, it also puts a pretty big cap on your income While your actual limit may be much higher.
The secret to making more money as a VA, says Julie, is to offer skills that are highly valuable and therefore earn you a much higher hourly rate. He talks about Facebook ads, sales funnels, copywriting, web design and more. These are all skills that come with a very high price tag, and they are all skills that you should be able to learn.
Build Your Laptop Life is about teaching you those skills, and Pipe & Lime is about doing those things for other clients. By combining teaching and done-for-you services, Julie and Madeline have been able to make multiple-six-figures as essentially high-level VAs.
Sell with Amazon
I shared an interview here on the blog with Jessica LaRue, an Amazon FBA seller who makes six figures on Amazon alone (not to mention her other online work). You can watch that interview here to see how she does it—and how she was able to hire her husband from his full-time job so they could both spend significantly more time with their son. This, to him, is what a rich life means, and he has found a way to make it happen.

Direct selling is a huge opportunity to make money — including big bucks — online and offline Running a successful blog or website can go a long way toward boosting your bottom line, especially if you know how to market it well and convert the leads you receive.
Not all direct selling is about your online presence, though. There is a large element of personal interaction, which is why direct selling can be so fun for so many people. Jennifer Tegnarud is a woman with a really interesting direct sales success story. She quit her job to become a stay-at-home mom and then decided she needed to do something “big” to keep in touch with her “pre-mom” self and make staying at home more feasible. Jennifer works part-time hours as a Stella and Dot stylist to make a full-time income doing something creative and exciting that really taps into her strengths and interests.
