1. Work From Home

Your top 7 work at home questions and my answers

I have been researching work at home jobs for over 13 years now. During that time, I received a lot of recurring questions at home from people who read this blog and/or subscribe to my newsletter.

Today, I decided to post some of these along with answers to this burning question many of you have Some of what I have to share may burst your bubble. And some of it may give you hope!

Either way, I hope that if you take the time to read this post, you’ll come away with something you didn’t know before about remote jobs.

Work at home questions and answers

Is work at home real, or are you trying to trick me?

Work from home / remote work is real! And that’s true now more than ever, especially since the pandemic.

Back when I first started looking for work from home for myself, it was the early 2000s and the concept of remote work was relatively new. If you do a Google search for “work from home” at the time, you’ll find nothing but pages and scammy or very shady stuff.

There were many fake “opportunities” where you were promised a job after you paid a certain fee or provided some very personal information about yourself.

That said, there was You could, but that information was really hard to find and once you did, it was hard to believe!

Not like that now. We’ve all heard of companies like Amazon, Starbucks, U-Haul, and countless others posting remote openings almost every day.

For a sampling of companies with regular remote openings, check out this list of work from home companies I’ve found reputable. You’ve probably heard more than half of them!

Do you know of any work from home jobs that require no experience, pay at least $600 a week, come with benefits, and work around my schedule?

No, I don’t know of any such jobs because they don’t exist.

Work at home is work. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean everything else will be easy. Sad but true!

As with any job outside the home, you need to apply. You must be qualified to do the work you are being paid to do. And in most cases you have to do the work when they have you do it.

That said, you can find no-experience jobs, work-your-own-schedule jobs, remote jobs with benefits, and high-paying work at home jobs. But do you find these four things to be one, amazing, perfect job that almost anyone can do?

No.

And if you find a remote job listing that claims all of the above, it’s probably a scam.

Do you know of any jobs for people living outside the US?

This is a US-based website and all the job boards I search are primarily US-based job listings.

I list opportunities for other countries if I come across them, but I don’t see many of them. But it’s not unusual for me to find things open to the US and Canada.

If you live in a country outside of the US and need remote work, I have some specific instructions to help you find a global job if that helps.

Perhaps there are companies that recruit remotely in your country, but unfortunately I rarely see those listings.

Because my time is very limited, I am not able to find and post opportunities for every country. So what you can do is learn to search for them on your own.

Why does my location matter if I work from home?

Some job listings will be open only for certain states. It frustrates people, and I get it.

I wrote a whole post about why location still matters when you work remotely, but if you don’t want to read it, here’s a quick summary of some of the reasons it matters:

  • Some companies require you to be present for meetings and company events
  • Some companies won’t hire you until they meet you in person
  • Some companies are unable to hire in certain states because of those states’ high minimum wages
  • Some companies are unable to hire in certain states due to recently passed laws regarding independent contractors
  • Some companies require you to train on site before letting you work from home
  • Some companies are more comfortable with “hybrid” set-ups where you work in the office at least some of the time

I hope this helps if you’re sometimes frustrated with the state requirements in some of the jobs I’ve posted.

Can I pay staff envelopes from home?

no Another example of a scam.

You’ll find job postings (still do) for envelope-stuffing jobs, and it’s always a scam. Don’t fall for it.

In the 13 years I’ve had this website, I have yet to find a legitimate “envelope stuffing job”.

I have been offered a remote job, but they want to interview me via WhatsApp and they are offering to send me a check to pay for my equipment. Is it real?

No! Another scam. And this one I see more often than others! Don’t proceed if you are “in talks” with a company for something like the above.

Employers like WhatsApp, Yahoo! chat, or any text or chat-based platform. And if they do, and they “hire” you and tell you they have to send you a check or deposit money so you can get the supplies, but then instruct you to pay a portion back to them, You are being cheated.

You can actually get into big trouble with your bank with this. Be very, very careful and don’t fall for it!

Which work at home is right for me? I’m overwhelmed with all the options!

I get emails from people who want me to help them figure out what they should do. I try to help when I can and have the time, but you will always know yourself, your background and your preferences better than I do.

I usually tell people to look at the latest work at home job leads, click on things that seem like a good fit that they might enjoy, and start applying!

You need to think about your qualifications, experience, time available to you and how much money you need to earn while narrowing down the right opportunity.

And of course, because of your personality type! If you’re not a people-person, you won’t enjoy a job where you have to talk to people all day (most customer service jobs). But if you’re outgoing, it might be perfect for you!

I’ve written more about narrowing it down to the perfect work from home job for you. Maybe give it a read and see if you get some insight!

In conclusion

These are the big homework questions I get asked the most If I think of more, maybe I’ll come back and add them.

If you have any of the above in mind, I hope what I posted answered and was helpful.
